Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
The Rotary Club of Polk Co. was established on January 1, 2000, as a part of Rotary District No. 6170 of central/southern Arkansas. The Rotary Club of DeQueen and its President Z.Z. Kamruddin, was instrumental in the organization of the Club. Initial membership was 27 and current membership stands at 33.
The Rotary Club of Polk Co. sponsors several local and international projects such as the Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus, which is a Rotary International Project to eradicate polio around the world. Several local projects which we sponsor are as follows:
A team in the Polk Co. annual Heart Walk.
A team in the annual Walk Across Polk Co.;
Contribute funds to the Single Parent Scholarship Fund at Rich Mountain Community College;
Using a grant from District 6170 purchased two freezers for Ninth Street Ministries in Mena;
Participate in Reading is Fundamental program for Polk Co. school children.
Contribute funds to a Mena/Polk Co. teacher to be used to purchase items/programs for the teacher's classroom;
The Dictionary Project in which we purchase and distribute dictionaries to every 3rd grader in Polk Co;
Provide backpacks for under privledged school childern.
Send 5 Polk Co. students each year to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy.
Our fund raisers are:
Annual Chili Supper held in December in conjunction with the Christmas Parade
Annual Pancake Breakfast held in June in conjunction with Lum and Abner Days
Valentines Sweetheart Banquet
Spasmodic yard sales using items donated by members.
The Rotary Club of Polk Co. meets weekly on Thursday at 11:30 am at the Lime Tree Restuarant in Mena.
